Dr. Matthew Dueppen is an Assistant Professor and the Department Chairperson of Music at Spring Arbor University, where he directs the SAU Concert Band, SAU Jazz Ensemble, and the SAU Jazz Cats Combo. He teaches Applied High Brass Lessons, Music History, and Music Education courses. He graduated from California State University, Northridge (BA-Music) in 2008, earned his Master’s in Music Education from Lamar University in 2017, and completed his Doctorate in Trumpet Performance at Florida State University in the Spring of 2021. Before his appointment at SAU, Dr. Dueppen was an Adjunct Professor of Music at Cornerstone University in Grand Rapids, MI, where he directed the Chamber Brass Ensembles and the Contemporary Jazz Ensemble.
As a performer, Dr. Dueppen has performed with the international brass ensemble, Eurobrass, in their 2022 season throughout Germany. From 2017-2022, he toured nationally and internationally with the renowned brass ensemble Tim Zimmerman and the King's Brass and was elected as the Assistant Director in their 21-22 season. The King's Brass has recorded 18 albums, and Dr. Dueppen is featured as lead trumpet and soloist on their most recently released albums, Festive Brass (2023) and Christmas Joy! (2021). He has also performed with several professional orchestras, including most recently with the Symphony of Southwest Michigan (2023) and the Jackson Chorale Orchestra (2023).
Dr. Dueppen is an active soloist, including appearances in the 2017 Reno Jazz Festival, the National Christian Choir (’20), and several performances of The Trumpet Shall Sound from Handel’s Messiah. He has presented lectures and solo recitals at several universities, including Dakota Wesleyan University, Texas A & M International University, Trine University, The University of Arizona, Florida State University, Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College, Black Hills State University, and Lamar University. Dr. Dueppen is an active contributor to the International Trumpet Guild Journal, publishing a peer-reviewed article on Clifford Brown's solo transcriptions, several music reviews, and column articles. In April 2021, he published his doctoral treatise, The Benefits of Nutritional Supplementation for Building the Muscles of the Trumpet Embouchure, through ProQuest publishing. Dr. Dueppen’s primary research interests include early Baroque trumpet, jazz history/analysis, and the health and wellness of brass players.
Dr. Dueppen was recently featured in the January 2023 edition of the International Trumpet Guild Journal for his titled Bridging the Gap: The Earliest Trumpet Methods & Their Influences in Modern Trumpet Pedagogy. This peer-reviewed article was presented in the Research Room of the 2023 International Trumpet Guild Conference in Minneapolis, MN. He is also working on a new album entitled Through Time, performing trumpet repertoire that encompasses the history of trumpet literature. Dr. Dueppen is also diligently working on a collaborative effort to commission a new Interactive Trumpet Sonata for the summer of 2024.
